Guard chains are long chains that were traditionally used to hold a watch - or sometimes a fur muff, used to keep the hands warm - and were most common in the Georgian and Victorian eras. They're long, over 50 inches in length (and sometimes over 60!), and usually feature a sturdy dog tag fastener, originally intended to hold the watch.
