Description

DATE: Victoria, 1847

A somewhat unusual Victorian memorial ring, modelled in 18 karat gold and dedicated to one Francis M. Harris. The outer band has been engraved with the word HIBERNIA, which is the island of Ireland in Classical Latin, as well as an infinity knot motif. We’ve been thinking about quite what’s going on here, and have two current theories: 1. There’s some link to the Great Famine, when around 1 million people died between 1846 and 1849… could Francis M. Harris have been a victim of the famine? 2. Francis was an Irish emigrant, so the Hibernia to the outer band is a reminder of home and roots. Any other suggestions?
