Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1870

Remarkable antique watch chain woven from the hair of a dearly beloved as a memorial piece (the Victorians were heavily into that kind of thing). The hair is woven into tight rope-like braids, which are then woven again - loosely this time - to form a thick and strong pocket watch chain. It's adorned with pinchbeck ends, a dog and an ornate cone-shaped stopper, with a watch key and compass fob suspended from further lengths of hairwork rope. At some stage in its life someone has added a hook clasp and dog tag (they may be original but they patina's slightly stronger than the other metal components) meaning it can be worn as a necklace. Engraved with the initials O.K. It dates from the 1870s, and the compass still works!
