Mid-Victorian Green Paste 5-Stone Ring

$850.00

Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1860

A bold mid-Victorian five stone ring set with vibrant green paste stones. It dates from circa 1860, modelled in 9 karat gold with fine hand-chased detailing to the band and an elaborate openworked gallery. The ring was made at a time when paste gems could command as much (if not more) than natural gemstones; the stones could be made completely clear and free from inclusions. The medium is usually a highly polished leaded glass, with minute amounts of certain metals added to give colour – the technique was perfected by Georges Frédéric Strass in 1724.
