Late Victorian Pink Paste Riviere Necklace

$2,000.00

Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1900

Exquisite Victorian rivière necklace adorned with 24 vibrant pink paste gemstones. These oval-faceted stones are set in open-back silver settings, creating the illusion of varied hues. Originating from the late Victorian period, circa 1900, this piece reflects an era where paste gemstones could rival or even surpass the value of their natural counterparts. The technique, credited to George Strass in the 1720s, involved adding lead to glass to enhance its refraction and dispersion, while minute quantities of elements like chromium, cobalt, iron, manganese, and selenium were used for colouring, creating a stunning array of colours.
