Japanese Meiji Mokume-gane Compass Pendant

Japanese Meiji Mokume-gane Compass Pendant

$650.00

Description

DATE: Meiji period, c.1890

This wonderful (and most unusual) pendant was made in Japan in the late 19th Century. The technique is called Mokume-gane, and involves the layering of different colours of metal in order to create patterns, or, as in this case, scenes. On the front of the piece, is an eerie picture of a cat, poised to pounce on a woman bathing in a river. The reverse features a compass (working) with a man peering through curtains above it. The back of the compass is hand-painted mother of pearl.
