Georgian Poseidon Intaglio Signet Ring

$1,850.00

Description

DATE: Georgian, c.1820

An impressive antique intaglio signet ring dating from the late Georgian era. The carnelian panel has been carved with a dramatic image of Poseidon, ancient Greek god of the Sea, riding a shell over the waves. It’s set into a yellow gold mount, with elegant trifurcated shoulders.

Poseidon, aka Neptune to the Romans, was the ancient god of the Sea and other waters, earthquakes, and horses. He was one of the Twelve Olympians, and is most often depicted holding a three-pronged Trident. His origins can be traced back as far as the Bronze age, with the name appearing in Mycenean Linear B inscriptions.
