Georgian Pearl Ouroboros Snake Brooch

Georgian Pearl Ouroboros Snake Brooch

$550.00

Description

DATE: Georgian, c.1820

A beautiful Georgian Ouroboros mourning brooch, set with a halo of pearls around a glass locket compartment with lock of hair within. The dedication to the reverse is made out to Elizabeth Harris, who died on the 29th of April 1888, seemingly on her 89th birthday. It's modelled in 15k rose gold throughout, and presumably the dedication was added to the brooch, which belonged to Elizabeth, that was inherited by a friend or relative.

The Ouroboros, or "tail devourer", is an ancient symbol used to represent introspection, and the cyclical nature of things.
