Georgian "Laetitia" Intaglio Banded Agate Signet Ring
Georgian "Laetitia" Intaglio Banded Agate Signet Ring
$2,200.00
Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1820
Striking Georgian signet ring with a finely carved intaglio of the Roman deity Laetitia - a goddess of fertility, associated with happiness, prosperity, and abundance. She was often depicted on coinage with an anchor as a sign of stability, or, like Fortuna, with a ship's rudder symbolizing her guiding one to good fortune or prosperity. The craftsmanship is wonderfully intricate, carved into a large orange/white panel of banded agate, capturing the goddess with one finger raised to the sky and one foot resting on the anchor - a strong breeze blowing her hair and shawl. Crafted in 15 karat gold throughout with an elaborate engraved band.
N.B. Another interpretation of the intaglio could be the personification of Hope (aka Lady Hope), in this case depicted holding an anchor and scanning the horizon awaiting the return of her lover. The upward finger pointing presumably in reference to her faith in God.
