Georgian Hardstone Seal Fob "Pan & Eromenos"

$850.00

Description

DATE: Georgian, c.1800

A particularly cool Georgian seal fob set with a black hardstone intaglio. The two figures depicted are Pan teaching his eromenos - the shepherd Daphnis - to play the pipes. While the intaglio is exceptionally executed, the fob itself is also worthy of note: Adorned with fluted, and orange blossom chased detailing, and featuring a snake wrapped around the top. It's modelled in 9 karat gold throughout, and dates to the turn of the 19th Century - circa 1800.

Pan was the ancient Greek god of wild, shepherds and flocks, nature of mountain wilds, rustic music and impromptus, and companion of the nymphs. He fell in love with Daphnis, whose father was Hermes, and taught him to play his famous pan pipes.
