Georgian Halley's Comet Brooch

Georgian Halley's Comet Brooch

$850.00

Description

DATE: Georgian, c.1835

A fantastic Georgian brooch depicting Halley's comet. The comet visited in 1835, inspiring jewellers of the time to commemorate the appearance in precious metals and gems. In this instance the comet itself is a turquoise cabochon, and the tail represented by fine granulated and cannetille goldwork finishing in a flat-cut garnet pansy. It's crafted in 15 karat gold and dates from the 1830s.

Halley's Comet is named after the Royal Astronomer Sir Edmund Halley, who was the first to realize that reported comet sightings between 1531 and 1682 were actually of one single object, that orbited the sun roughly every 75 years. As such, he was able to predict, with remarkably accuracy, the year in which it would re-appear - 1759 - and when it did, they gave the comet his name.
