Georgian Garnet Witch's Heart Pin

$750.00

Description

DATE: Georgian, c.1790

Utterly charming little lace pin dating from the George III period, circa 1790. It's crafted in 9 karat rose gold (with to most gorgeous patina) and features a garnet-set flower nestled within the cleft at the top. The heart itself has a knife-edge profile and fully open centre. Lace pins were used to secure a length of lace or ribbon, usually at the neck or shoulder. Although today the terms 'pin' and 'brooch' are used more-or-less interchangeably, back in the 18th and 19th centuries little pins like this would have always been referred to as lace or handkerchief pins, and larger examples as brooches.
