Georgian “Doves of Pliny” Shell Cameo Brooch

DATE: Georgian, c.1820

This exceptional cameo brooch depicts a famous mosaic by the 2nd Century BC artist Sosus of Pergamon. Its was a subject of intrigue for Pliny the Elder, and as such became known as "The Doves of Pliny". The shell cameo sits in a 15k gold late Georgian mount, and likely dates to the same era.

CONDITION

Very good, some solder is present on the fittings and the shell has a natural stress line which would have been present when carved. Visible from behind however concealed from the front - of little consequence.
