Georgian Carnelian "English Pointer" Intaglio Ring

$1,100.00

Description

DATE: Georgian, c.1810

An exceptional Georgian intaglio ring, the carnelian agate panel has been carved with a family crest. Depicted is an English Pointer, in profile, with tail straight behind - according to Fairbain's Book of Crests, this particular seal belonged to (you guessed it...) the Pointer family. The ring mount is modelled in 9k rose gold - a lovely hue - with a reeded band.

Records of Pointers in England trace as far back as 1650. According to one source, the Pointer came to be in the 16th and 17th centuries, when pointing breeds, including the Old Spanish and Portuguese pointer, were brought from the European mainland to England.
