Description

DATE: Edwardian, c.1910

A stunning antique cluster ring set with a vibrant red spinel centre with a halo of diamond petals. The stones are set in platinum, with a hint of millegrain around the edges, and the band crafted in 18 karat yellow gold with diamond set shoulder details. With a finely open worked gallery, the light is let in behind the stones, enhancing their colour and sparkle. It dates from the Edwardian period, circa 1910, perfect as a cocktail ring or alternative engagement ring.

Spinel is a little known and hugely under-appreciated gemstone. It comes in a range of colours, from deep purples and blues to bright reds and hot pinks. For thousands of years, spinels were often mistaken and mis-sold as sapphires and rubies, before a technique was eventually determined to tell the gems apart in the 18th century.
