Edwardian Firefighter Medallion

Description

DATE: Edwardian, 1907

A fine antique medallion with firefighters in releif on one side, and the words "Presented by I&R Morley - Wood St Fire 1907" on the other around a fireman's helmet and axe and the name C. W. Simpkin. I&R Morely were are hoisery firm established in London in 1797, and I can only presume that there was a fire at their Wood St. warehouse in 1907 that merited the presentation of the medallion. It sounds like the fire brigade succeeded in putting out the fire, and C. W. Simpkin displayed particular distinction in the effort. At the time, the firm was one of the 50 biggest employers in Britain, boasting over 8000 employees, and it continued trading until the 1960s when it was sold.

The pendant is modelled in 15 karat gold and is of particularly high quality. It remains in great condition, with clear Birmingham hallmarks.
