Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1850

A wonderful early Victorian "Days of the Week" Cameo ring, unusually modelled in gold (they're normally in gilt metal or silver). Each day is represented by the approproate classical deity: Diana as the Moon for Monday, Mars for Tuesday, Mercury for Wednesday, Jupiter for Thursday, Venus for Friday, Saturn for Saturday, and finally Apollo as the Sun for Sunday. The cameos are carved from various coloured lava and agate, in high relief, with excellent detail. It dates from the 1850s, and was likely picked up by a traveller on the Grand Tour.
