Early Victorian Coral "Mano Cornuto" Horned Hand Brooch

Early Victorian Coral "Mano Cornuto" Horned Hand Brooch

$1,200.00

Description

DATE: Early Victorian, c.1850

An incredible early Victorian Mano Cornuto (or Horned Hand) brooch in carved orange coral. Held in the hand is a coiled snake, and dangling from the snake's mouth is a collection of amulets: a heart, a fish, and a cornicello horn of plenty.

The Mano Cornuto is an ancient Italian hand gesture with dual meaning: one to ward of evil spirits, two as a vulgar expression. The piece has been beautifully carved, with slender fingers and exceptional detail - it dates from the mid 19th Century and remains in remarkably good condition.
