The widest band is engraved “Wir Deutsche Furchten Gott Sonst nichts auf der Welt!” – We Germans fear God, nothing else in the world – along with an Iron Cross and the year 1914; the middle ring has a black enamelled 1914/15 and an articulated black Iron Cross with W for Kaiser Wilhelm II in the centre; and the third features the words VATERLANDSDANK 1914 (Fatherland Thanks) around the outer band, very similar to an example in the Imperial War Museum collection, possibly a replacement ring exchanged for a gold wedding band donated to help fund the German war effort.
