$1,200.00
Description
DATE: Art Deco, c.1920
Cool solid gold mechanical pencil pendant by the OG Sampson Mordan & Co. Sampson Mordan (1790 - 1843) was a British silversmith and co-inventor of the first patented mechanical pencil (and incidentally, in his youth, was an apprentice of inventor and locksmith Joseph Bramah). The breakthrough pencil invention involved an internal mechanism that propelled the lead out of the tip once it had worn down, as opposed to previous designs which simply held the lead in one fixed place. Upon Mordan's death in 1843 his sons, Sampson Jr and Augustus inherited the firm and continued making pencils, silverware, and brass scales until their factory was destroyed by the Luftwaffe in 1941. This pencil is retractable as well as mechanically propelling, and remains in fine working order, with bail and jump ring for wear as a pendant.
