Art Deco Emerald & Diamond Solitaire Ring

$670.00

Description

DATE: Art Deco, c.1930

A stylish Art Deco solitaire ring set with a principal square emerald cut emerald in millegrain bezel setting and accented by platinum diamond shoulders. It was made by hand in England, circa 1930, with shoulders subtly tapering towards the head.

Unlike many of the pieces we handle, we can glimpse a specific chapter in its history. There's a hallmark to the inner band for the year 1979, meaning the ring was retailed in a shop on or soon after that year. Although hallmarking was originally introduced in the UK in 1300 - by Edward I as a form of consumer protection - hallmarking jewellery wasn't made compulsory until the Hallmarking Act of 1973. This accounts for the fact that many of the pieces we find prior to this date either feature stamps such as "18ct" "PLAT or simply "18" to indicate the fineness or metal type, or feature no marks at all. In the 1970s, whomever retailed this ring in their shop would have been legally obliged to send it to an official assay office before offering it for sale. Since 2007, however, any article of precious metal made prior to 1950 can be sold as gold, silver, or platinum without a hallmark, so long as the seller can prove the fineness of the metal.
