Art Deco Ceylon Sapphire Stud Earrings

Art Deco Ceylon Sapphire Stud Earrings

DATE: Art Deco, c.1920

Stunning antique Ceylon sapphire stud earrings dating from the Art Deco period, circa 1920. The stones display the most incredible pale lavender-blue colour, and they're certified as natural with no indications of heat treatment, Sri Lanka origin. Interestingly, they're set in silver mounts (where, given the quality of the stones, you'd expect them to be gold or platinum). The reason they're silver is they were cut and set at (or very close to) the mine they came from - the aim being to produce finished articles of jewellery ready for sale as quickly (and economically) as possible, with all lapidary and metalwork done by hand. We initially considered recreating the mounts in platinum to re-set the stones - thinking that someone had set them in silver without realising what they were - but to retain their history and integrity they're offered as they were first cut and set. In this instance silver (with a backstory) is more valuable than platinum IMO.
