Antique WW1 Trench Art Signet Ring "Forget-Me-Not Lens"

$550.00

Description

DATE: WW1, c.1917

A WW1 era 'Trench Art' signet ring worked from the aluminium nose cone of a German artillery shell. Pieces like this were made by recuperating soldiers as they took time away from the front lines. Working from what they had to hand, the level of craftsmanship is often nothing short of remarkable.

This ring features a forget-me-not flower alongside the word Lens; it commemorates the Battle of Hill 70, which took place along the Western Front on the outskirts of Lens in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France between 15 and 25 August 1917. The battle was costly for both sides and, like so many operations on the Western Front, it sadly failed to accomplish very much at all.
