Antique WW1 Journée Du Poilu Brooch by Lalique
$650.00
Description
DATE: WW1, c.1915
An incredible antique silver Maltese Cross brooch with engraving by René Jules Lalique. It's crafted in the Art Nouveau style, and depicts a man holing a giant eagle by the throat. It was made to commemorate the first Journée du Poilu (or day of the infantryman).
‘Poilu’, or ‘shaggy one’, was the nickname for the ordinary French infantryman, equivalent to the British ‘Tommy’. In December 1915 the French Government sanctioned the establishment of a National Day to honour, support and raise funds of the common French soldiers. The craftsmanship is truly exceptional, as we would expect from Lalique.
