Antique HMS Renown Wairoa Commemorative Pendant

Antique HMS Renown Wairoa Commemorative Pendant

DATE: Art Deco, 1920

In intriguing - and very lovely - antique gold pendant dating from 1920. It's modelled as a lifebuoy with a chased picture of a steam ship in the centre (probably the HMS Renown), and the back is carved with the dedication: "Presented to Mr S.L. Bennett by the Wairoa School Children on occasion of Prince of Wales visit, April 1920"

Wairoa is a small town in New Zealand, and the prince in question was Edward, son of George V, who would later breifly reign as Edward VIII before his infamous abdication. After arriving in Auckland aboard the battlecruiser HMS Renown, he spent four weeks travelling the country aboard a lavishly appointed Royal Train and by motor coach, visiting 50 cities and towns from Auckland to Invercargill.
