Description
DATE: Vintage, 1976
Large zodiac medallion by esteemed Magnus Maximus Designs, a short-lived English jewellery company active between 1971 and 1980. MMD was founded by three jewellery makers, Michael Gray Bell, Pauline Diane Bell and Ian Murray Pennell, and became known for their works incorporating flat or rounded hardstone cabochons (such as this one) or 'druzies', nuggets or crystals of minerals in their raw form. This medallion features a large, flat red and green agate as the background, with sterling silver frame and ram. Edinburgh hallmarks indicate it was made in 1976.
Capricorn is the 10th astrological sign of the zodiac, originating from the constellation Capricornus, the horned goat (December 21 to January 21). One of the four cardinal signs, ruled by the planet Saturn, and considered an earth sign. There's an apparent link between the Capricorn sea goat and Enki, the Sumerian god of wisdom and water who also has the head and upper body of a goat and lower body of a fish.
GOAT (or the goat) is also used to mean (the) Greatest Of All Time.
Magnus Maximus was Roman emperor in the western portion of the Empire from 383 to 388. He usurped the throne from emperor Gratian in 383 through negotiation with emperor Theodosius I. He was not the greatest emperor of all time (but not an especially bad one either).
