DATE: Vintage, c.1960

Virgo is strongly associated with wheat, and the autumn equinox, and usually represented by the Maiden (Virgo in Latin meaning virgin). She's often associated in Greek myth with Persephone, daughter of Demeter, who was stolen by Hades and forced to live in the Underworld for one third of the year. Demeter, in distress, neglects the crops while she's away over winter making harvests impossible until Persephone's return in the spring.

This incredible vintage zodiac ring was made in the 1960s. The paste stone is an electric blue colour, and it's intaglio carved with Virgo the Maiden on one knee holding a sheaf of wheat. Above to her right her symbol, and above left that of Mercury, her ruling planet. The ring itself is almost Deco in style, but with a strong 1960s sci-fi/industrial influence.
