1920s Egyptian Revival Enamelled Moses Basket Pendant

$350.00

Description

DATE: Art Deco, c.1925

In 1922, the British archaeologist Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun triggering a fresh wave of Egyptomania that influenced the Art Deco movement, and writers such as Agatha Christie and Thomas Mann. Egyptian Revival jewellery came back into fashion, and demand for Egyptian-themed pieces such as this one boomed.

The pendant is crafted as a Moses basket, with an enamelled top decorated with a finely detailed image of the Sphinx and Pyramids (it almost looks like a watercolour painting...), and reed-textured sides and bottom. The piece opens to reveal a little baby Moses. It's modelled in gilded silver throughout, and will have been made in Egypt.
