18th Century "I Will Never Forget" Memorial Brooch

$2,350.00

Description

DATE: Georgian, c.1790

An exquisite 18th century memorial brooch made circa 1790. The central locket compartment is fashioned in the shape of a heart (the old old-school heart shape with no top cleft) and holds an intricately woven lock of hair inside. It's bordered by white enamelled 'ribbons' featuring the words "Je N'oublierois Jamais", meaning "I will never forget". A diamond-set crown sits atop the heart, with garnets at the compass points, and gorgeous textured leaves to either side. Although the motto is in French, it's likely English in origin, a poignant memorial piece to a soul now lost to the mists of time.
