18th Century Black Dot Paste Earrings

$950.00

Description

DATE: Georgian, c.1780

These antique solitaire earrings are old. Really, really old. Set with highly domed black dot paste gemstones, foil backed to enhance their brightness, they were made in the 18th Century (circa 1780). The stones rest in silver "pie-crust" settings, a sort of amalgamation of claw and rub over, and have later added gold ear wires. The black dot in the middle of each stone has been painted on to replicate the open culet found on old cut diamonds (prior to the invention of the modern brilliant cut, they used to chop off the pointy end of the stone).
