Description
DATE: Victorian, 1901
A fine quality antique double heart MIZPAH brooch dating from 1901. It's crafted in sterling silver, with applied rose and yellow gold letters, flowers, and ivy leaves.
Mizpah jewellery symbolises a bond between two estranged parties, with God as their witness. Its first usage (Gen 31.49-50) refers to it as a pillar of stones set up by Jacob and Laban. The pillar of stones acted as a witness to the bond between the two men. The word is often used as the name for a cemetery, and can sometimes be found on headstones and mourning jewellery.
